Going Back to Calgary

Return shuttles to Calgary and YYC: how much buffer to leave for a flight, and why the return is not a mirror of the outbound.

Updated August 2026

The return is the leg people under-plan, because the outbound went fine.

It Is Not Symmetrical

Coming out, a delay costs you time. Going back, a delay costs you a flight. You are now working to a check-in deadline across 90 minutes of mountain highway that is subject to weather, summer traffic and the occasional closure.

How Much Buffer

Leave Banff so that you reach the airport at least three hours before an international departure and two before a domestic one — and treat that as the minimum in winter, when the highway can slow dramatically or close.

Yes, it means leaving early. It is much better than the alternative.

Private Makes More Sense Here

On the outbound, a shared seat is usually fine. On the return, your own departure time is worth more, because the risk is asymmetric. Private transfers back to Calgary or YYC run from around $253 for the vehicle.

Also Worth Knowing

  • Some services run Banff/Canmore to Calgary or YYC, so you can be collected from Canmore if that is where you stayed.
  • Ski and luggage rules apply on the return as well — luggage and skis.
  • Book the return when you book the outbound. Both directions sell out in season, and free cancellation up to 24 hours means it costs nothing to hold.
